TRAK has created a completely unique guided-trip itinerary for the Baja region, previously only available to self-guided adventurers. If you fell in love with Baja on a previous visit, then our new itinerary is an amazing way to re-discover a different side of this pristine, world-class paddling region.
Experience the unforgettable magic of Baja California Sur on an 8-day kayaking adventure during the spring equinox, where day and night stand in perfect balance. Paddle through the tranquil, remote waters of Bahia Conception, where desert landscapes meet the sea. As we explore the rugged coastline, you’ll enjoy breathtaking paddling, immersive natural history and cultural experiences in this pristine environment. With opportunities for snorkeling, hiking, and night paddling, each day is an opportunity to interact with this unique bioregion.
This expedition is designed for a minimum of 6 adventurers, creating a tight-knit group where teamwork and community are key. This is not a pony tide, but a participatory adventure! Be involved in meaningful group decision making processes—like whether to take on a stretch-goal and paddle to San Basilio! You will be included at every step of this expedition, with the goal of inspiring self-leadership in future trips of your own.
DAY 1: Arrival and Orientation
Fly into Loreto (LTO), where you'll be picked up and transported to Mulegé. Settle in for your first night at a local house for a welcome dinner. This evening, we’ll gather for a trip orientation, preparation, and Q&A session providing all the details you need to prepare for the days ahead.
DAY 2: Mulegé to Santo Domingo (8 NM)
After breakfast, we’ll be transported to our put-in point near Mulegé, where our kayaking journey begins. Paddle to Santo Domingo, where we’ll set up camp and enjoy a sunset hike to a nearby point for stunning views of the Gulf of California. We’ll introduce some group decision-making elements for the adventure ahead.
DAY 3: Santo Domingo to La Ballenita (11 NM)
Today’s paddle takes us to La Ballenita. Along the way, we’ll take breaks to hike to a historic mine or enjoy some snorkeling. Nightly, we’ll reflect on the day’s journey and set the stage for the next leg of our adventure.
Day 4: La Ballenita to Santa Rosa (7 NM)
We’ll paddle to Santa Rosa, where we’ll set up camp and have the chance to snorkel and explore tide pools. Here, we can fish for dinner or just relax on the shoreline. If conditions are right, we may have the opportunity for a bioluminescent night paddle—a truly magical experience.
Day 5: Layover in Santa Rosa
After a night paddle, we may have an option to enjoy a well-deserved layover day in Santa Rosa. In a typical layover day, the choice is yours to rest, explore the desert ecosystem, snorkel, fish, or practice kayak skills. We’ll come together as a group to discuss the possibility of extending our trip to San Basilio as a stretch goal, weighing the decision based on group energy levels and paddling conditions.
Day 6: Santa Rosa to South of Santa Teresa (8 NM)
We continue south, making our way to the beautiful Medano Blanco, a white-sand beach perfect for snorkeling and relaxing. This is a great spot to unwind and soak in the beauty of the remote Baja coastline.
Day 7: South of Santa Teresa to San Nicolás (11 NM)
Paddle to the traditional fishing village of San Nicolás, where we’ll meet locals and learn about the area’s fishing culture. Walking through this small, historic village offers a chance to reflect on the shifts in both land and sea witnessed by the residents.
Day 8: San Nicolás to Loreto Airport
Enjoy breakfast in the village before we are picked up for the journey back to Loreto. If you’d like to extend your stay in this charming town, you’re welcome to do so. Otherwise, this marks the end of our incredible equinox expedition.
Optional Group Decision: San Basilio Final Leg
Throughout the trip, the group will have the chance to discuss and decide whether to extend the journey with an optional paddle to San Basilio, adding 18-20 NM. This stretch goal offers an additional layer of adventure, and the decision will be made collectively, ensuring that everyone feels ready for the challenge.
This trip is for paddlers who already own and are ready to travel with a TRAK 2.0 kayak, along with their own paddling kit (PFD, paddle, safety gear), and basic camping gear.
A comprehensive packing list will be shared upon trip registration.
Ramon was born in Mulege Baja California Sur, México. As a child Ramon spent more time in the water than on land. Always fishing and diving. With a short traditional education, Ramon followed his passion. He worked as a diver and commercial fisherman for many years, a skill that later on would become handy for his current career.
Ramon has around 20 years of sea kayak experience, teaching leadership in four different countries in America; USA,CANADA,CHILE and MEXICO. With more than 300 weeks of field work as a leadership instructor and working as a guide for Sea Trek Baja for many years.
Dave has an extensive history in the kayak industry ranging over 35 years going back to his early days at the Necky Kayaks factory where he found his passion for kayaking which has included touring, whitewater, surf and racing. He keeps his life lean and mobile, and so does not have much room to spare either in or on his overlander for a 16-ft touring kayak.
In addition to that experience, he is also happy to see other paddlers flourish when they are able to test a unique product and make up their own mind on whether it is right for them - offering guidance along the way. Now two TRAK 2.0s join him on his annual migrations between BC and BC - that is, British Columbia and Baja California!
